#25 - Another Weekend, Another Wrap-Up

How was the weekend?  Mine was pretty good.  John and I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy on Friday night.  It was pretty good.  I actually liked it more than most of the recent superhero movies.  My apologies to everyone who loved The Avengers, but I didn't.  On Saturday, I had a coffee shop date with a friend, but neither of us drank coffee, because we are cool like that. Then I just spent the rest of the day doing miscellaneous things around the house.  Sundays are generally the same around here - church, lunch, housework, church, dinner.  Sometimes our Sunday school class hangs out in the evenings, which we did again this weekend.  And in an interesting turn of events, I made a last minute decision to visit my family next weekend.  I had a quick video-conference with my nieces to tell them, and they are pretty excited.  My campaign for favorite aunt continues...

And now I'm a little concerned that I need to leave town in just a few days!  At least I'm driving, so don't have to worry about airline approved packing.

#14 - Navy Week - Throwback Navy

In the last few years, navy has become one of my favorite neutrals.  I used to wear a lot of black, but navy seems like the less goth/emo cousin, and still goes with everything.  So I've been drawn to it more and more. Prior to about 2012, I don't think I had anything navy in my wardrobe, except maybe a Cardinals t-shirt (this one).  

I blame my previous aversion to navy on my private school uniform.  I had to wear a navy jumper every day from 2nd-5th grade.  And then in middle school and high school, my options were either a khaki skirt or a navy skirt.  The high school navy option was plaid.  (and no, it wasn't a cute Catholic school uniform.  It was very unflattering, midi-length before midi-length was a thing).  But anyway, I dug through my photo albums and found this fantastic Throwback Thursday picture.

I would guess this is the first day of 4th grade.  I obviously hadn't gotten the hang of smiling like a normal person (am I trying to wink?  I don't even know what is happening).  I cropped my brother out, because I don't want him to hate me (not saying he looks bad - I don't think he had an awkward phase).  And I'm not sharing the first day of 5th grade picture that I found, because it's really really bad.  I'm not really sure why I had any friends that year, because I looked ridiculous.  I must have had a great personality or something.  Or I was very blessed with non-shallow classmates.

Judy Greer talks about this in her book.  When you go through a phase where you are super awkward looking, and then you think you are pretty much gorgeous once you start to look normal.  I mean, I might be average looking now, but I've improved exponentially since I was 10!

Anyway, what are we even talking about anymore?  Navy!  I used to have to wear navy, so I didn't like that.  Then after about 10 years of not having to wear navy, I started liking it again.  Great story, Andi!

#7 - Navy Theme

Originally, I was going to skip a theme week in August, but then Kate mentioned an easy idea - navy!  Since I'm wearing navy almost every day in August, this is perfect.  She'll be my co-host starting Monday the 11th, and you'll very likely see this shirt in the mix!  So you've got a few days to plan if you want to join in.  Navy is easy, right?

#1 - Numero Uno

Kicking off the 30x30 with some neutrals.  And since I couldn't think of a clever title, I am tricking you all with some Spanish.  It basically just says "Number one - number one" up there, but it looks kind of fancy.  Now, if I was really fancy, I'd have gone with French.  But I'm not that kind of blogger.

Speaking of speaking Spanish, have I ever mentioned that I won the Sombrero Award in high school? (yes, it was literally a sombrero. yes, that might be offensive)  It was given to the student most likely to still be speaking Spanish 10 years in the future.  Someone should tell my Spanish teacher that he was 100% correct, if by "speaking Spanish" they meant "occasionally using Spanish in a blog post title, but really not remembering how to say anything useful."  A quick search through the archives and yes, I have mentioned this before.  There's even a picture.  You're welcome.  (I mean, "de nada!")

Not Festival Style

 

On Saturday, John and I went to Lincoln to see Ben Folds.  It was an outdoor concert - definitely not a "festival,"  but many of the other attendees were in full on festival style mode.  This is not a style that I participate in (oops, I forgot to wear a bikini top and a maxi skirt and a flower crown!).  Rather I was in full on prep-tastic mode:

In hindsight, I would have worn jeans because my legs got a little cold, and sitting in the grass was kind of itchy.  I also would have brought an extra jacket to sit on.  And probably worn shoes that I was less concerned about getting muddy.  But whatever.  It was fine. 



Ben Folds was fantastic, as usual.  As I've mentioned, I've seen him several times ( I think 12 or 13?) over the past 10 years.   In 2004, it was just him and his piano.  Every other time, he's had a band with him.  This time it was just the piano again.  Honestly, it's great either way.  And he did a little drum solo randomly in the middle of the show. 

The crowd was a little lackluster, but I have unreasonably high standards for who should go to concerts.  Like, if you don't know all the lyrics to all the songs, just STAY HOME and leave room for the real fans!  I'm kind of kidding, but not as much as I should be.  But Ben Folds has several songs that require audience participation, and it's really cool if the crowd is in the know.  It's kind of awkward if no one else around you is singing the trumpet parts.  Also, if you are going to hold up a stupid sign (that blocks everyone behind you) letting him know you will also be at the Kansas City concert, I'm going to harbor negative feelings towards you.  Hypothetically, of course.   

Anyway, there's my not-at-all-festival-style post for the summer.  I'll probably be wearing not festival style a lot.  Like all the time.  So if you need any not festival style inspiration, you're in the right place.

Dressing Room Inspiration

When I bought this scarf, I was wearing this skirt.  I happened to try on a navy/white striped sweater with the scarf, and I had this skirt on, and I even Instagrammed it!  And I thought it looked really cute, so I filed it away in my list of outfit ideas.  Which is a good thing, because when I am running late, I need to have something easy to throw together!

And for a little weekend recap - I mostly watched tv shows while folding and ironing clothes.  Saturday evening we hung out with John's parents and played Carcassonne.  My mom bought it for John for Christmas, and then his mom bought us a couple expansion packs, so we had to try them out.  If you are into unique games, it's pretty fun!  Sunday after evening church, our Sunday school class had a little dinner hangout, which was also fun.  And there was cake!
