Book review - Ella Enchanted

I'm usually up for a retelling of a fairy tale, and Ella Enchanted was a great one!  It's the classic Cinderella tale slightly modified.  This is another one written for a younger reader, but I really liked it.

In this version, Ella is cursed by a foolish fairy so she has to obey anything someone asks her to do.  Obviously, this is a problem when the evil stepsisters figure it out. And then the story builds from there as she tries to sort out her life.  I liked the way Ella wasn't just a helpless pretty needs (a la Disney), but actually solves her own problems. Definitely a fun read!

  1. I haven't read this book in FOREVER! But it was my favorite when it came out. I love this book. I need to re-read it.

  2. Awww, you just took me down memory lane! I used to LOVE this book back in the day! I think the story is so creative (twisted fairy tales are my favorites!), and I loved that Ella wasn't helpless either. Gail Carson Levine has some great other books as well!
