Lessons Learned

There's a bit of a story around this skirt.  It starts back in May, when I had a last minute business trip and I didn't feel like any of my current options would be professional enough.  After a very stressful mall trip, I came home with 2 suits.  This one from Younkers that I ended up keeping, and one from New York & Company, which I immediately regretted and intended to return.  But then I was out of town a lot, and I'm rarely at the mall that has NY&Co.  I looked at the receipt, and it said "90 Day Hassle-Free Returns!" so I wasn't too worried about it.  Approximately 62 days after buying the suit, I finally made it into the store to return it.  Well, "hassle-free" really means "some hassle."  After 60 days, they won't refund your money, but just give you store credit.  If it was a store I normally shop at, this would be fine, but I never buy things at NY&co.  Honestly, I think I have 2 belts from there in my closet and that's all.  I asked to talk to the manager, because I hate it when companies have tricky policies like that.  Bad news - I was already talking to the manager.  Anyway, I was stuck with this stupid gift card.

So I figured it was partially my own fault, and I'd just deal with it.  I tried to sell it, but no one was interested.  Then I decided to go try and find something that I'd like.  I searched the store and tried on a lot of items.  This skirt and a couple shirts seemed okay.  But again, with the tricky policies.  They had huge signs up in the entire store about Buy One, Get One 50% off, with no indication that it only applied to pants.  So I got frustrated again and ended up only getting the skirts.  I will say that the workers in the store were very nice and I know they can't help it that the company has shady policies.

Anyway, then I was talking to my mother-in-law about the whole thing and she said she'd buy the rest of the giftcard from me.  So she is my hero.  And I doubt I'll be shopping in NY&Co ever again.  They are too tricky for me.

But hey, this skirt is fun!  And I've learned to return things ASAP, no matter what the receipt says!

  1. What a bummer! I haven't shopped there in years. When I first started working in an office I purchased a few items from there since they were inexpensive, but I was then disappointed in the quality. I really like this skirt on you though!

  2. First off your skirt is to. Second off why say you have a 90 return policy if after 60 you will get a store gift card. I would have contacted cooperate on that. I used to shop at NY&Co a long time ago for work clothes. I don't shop there anymore.

  3. I hate it when stores have tricky policies like that. They are so frustrating! I think I only have a couple of things from that store. I look around every once in awhile, but I can never find anything I like. Thank goodness for your mother in law! And I do think the skirt is cute!

  4. That's crap! I used to shop at NY&Co a lot in grad school because their work wear was cheap...but turns out it was made cheaply, too. Go figure. I have no idea what it's like now, I mean that skirt is adorable! But I still think I am going to avoid it after what you went through!

  5. What a bummer about their tricksy policy! We don't have NY&Co up here, but I always return things asap if I decide they're going back - you never know what a store might do to stick you with a gift card, or even refuse to take back an item. Ugh.

Drama aside - that skirt is totally amazing on you! I love box-pleats, but I have the hardest time wearing them, they always seem to make me look 10,000 times wider than I actually am. You, however, are rocking this skirt! Love it!

  6. What a frustrating experience! I think I may have gotten a pair of pants there once upon a time (high school?) and then was really bummed out when they shut down in our mall. Now when I go there, I'm amazed at how cheap and shoddy half the store looks (at least in my mall). But there's always one ensemble on a mannequin that I want to walk out with. And of course that outfit is the one thing in the store that isn't 50% off. At least you were able to find something really cute -- hopefully it was something you could see yourself buying because you wanted to and not because you had to.

  7. What a bummer! I used to buy a few things from there during college but haven't found anything good for years. I'm glad it all worked out in the end.

  8. I am bad at returning, I almost never returned things. That skirt is super cute, however. Love the nautical flair.
