Book Review - Yes Please

Here's an unpopular opinion: I tried watching Parks and Rec and just couldn't get into it.  It seems like a show I would love, but I just didn't find it all that funny after watching a few episodes.

Anyway, I kept hearing people say Amy Poehler's book was great, so I decided to read it, even though I'm not a huge fan of hers.  Plus my library has the ebook, which is awesome for me right now.

AP is funnier in parts of the book than I usually think she is on TV.  But she spends a lot of time talking about how hard it is to write a book, or glossing over times in her life that would be more interesting.  I didn't want her to dish all the dirt on her divorce, but some more details about the different theaters and jobs she had as she was working her way up to SNL would have been fun.  I guess the whole thing was just kind of boring, and she seems like she's had a pretty interesting life, so how did a fairly short memoir not capture that?

I didn't love the book, but for some reason it did make me want to try watching Parks and Rec again.  So maybe I'll try that.

  1. It took me a little while to get into it, but we ended up loving Parks & Rec - watched on Netflix last year. It gets better and better I think. And I listened to the memoir, which I think made me enjoy it more. But then I was in the middle of watching (and liking) Parks & Rec, which made a big difference I think in my take on the book. Same thing with Tina Fey's book - we loved 30 Rock, so it made those parts of her book great, therefore we liked the book more.

Anyway. Just read Mindy Kaling's latest, and it was light and fun, if you like her!

  2. I agree with Anne! I wasn't into it right away but the goofy characters really grow on you and become more lovable! This book has been on my to-read list for awhile but I just haven't felt the urge to pick it up. Maybe someday...

  3. I second what Anne and Whitney said - the beginning of Parks & Rec was a little slow for me, but by the end of the first season/beginning of the second season, we were absolutely HOOKED! I hope you're able to get into it this time around :) I listened to the audiobook version of Yes Please, and I honestly loved it. I think hearing Amy actually telling the stories herself was so entertaining. I have heard a lot of negative comments about this book saying that it wasn't funny, but I appreciated that it allowed Amy to tell the stories of her life more, without constantly needing to be making a joke. :)
